  The Angel Series

After the shock of being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour I spent many months having radiation therapy and radical chemotherapy. Despite all the wonderful support I received from Maria and family and friends, I still had to go through what is a very lonely process – feeling ill and fighting the effects of all the treatment over a long period of time. Each day of my chemotherapy in London I made the effort to go for a walk in the cemetery at the bottom of my garden. It is the most beautiful environment, not sinister as people might think, but full of life; more than 40 species of birds, foxes, squirrels and above all, hundreds of mature trees and flowering shrubs many of which were planted in the nineteenth century. Full of love too, with messages to people who are missed. And beneath the trees are many old statues and sculptures of angels keeping watch, and I began to find them very comforting. When walking past it was as if they were keeping me company. As I got to “know” each one I realised that they had a presence, and every time I went for another walk it was somehow reassuring to know I would find them there again. But every day they looked a little different, with changes in light and weather. So I began to make a series of images to remind myself of these objects which, for me, had become friends. Despite the modest materials used to make them, over the last 100 years with help from nature and the weather they have become rather beautiful. Now Maria and I return with fondness to see them from time to time, and they still have that same effect of reassurance and comfort. In over 30 years of professional photography this has become one of my favourite subjects.
